  1. Define what bullying is per the definition in the video (cited from stopbullying.gov)
  2. Outline the four types of bullying by creating an anti-bullying poster.
  3. Analyze how The Golden Rule has been presented across different times and cultures.

VIDEO RUN TIME: 4 mins, 33 seconds

SUPPLIES NEEDED: Poster paper and art supplies. 1 iPad(or computer) for every 4 students.

2. Discussion Questions

Where have you experiences physical, verbal, social, or cyberbullying?

Why do you think our natural instinct is to fight back or to run and tell?

What did Tom say was the secret power of the Golden Rule?

How can you use the Golden Rule to overcome hurts with kindness?

3. Group Activities

A.  Break into groups of three or four and have each group create a “4 TYPES OF BULLYING poster. Highlight each type of bullying: Physical, verbal, social, and cyberbullying. Upon completion, present the posters to the group and then hang them up for display.

B.  Get out the iPads (or go to a computer lab) and have each group research the varying ways The Golden Rule (“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”) has appeared across different cultures throughout history. Have each group create a list of the saying and their origins.

C.  Have each group present their findings back to the large group, and give a prize to the group with the best list.

4. Individual Assignment

Write a short essay (one page or less) on the topic of The Golden Rule. What is it? What does it mean? What’s simple about it? What’s brilliant about it? How can it help you respond to difficult people in your life? Turn the paper in to your leader the next time you meet.

  2. Evaluate how to respond to six hypothetical bullying scenarios.
  3. Develop a personal plan for responding to bullying.

2. Discussion Questions

What do you think it means to set a boundary of the heart?

Do the words of others have to hurt you, or is it something you can control?

What would it look like for you to be the change on your campus?

3. Group Activities

A.  Write these terms at the top of the board: EMPOWER YOURSELF vs. EMPOWER THE BULLY.

B.  SAY THIS: Today we’re going to look at a handful of scenarios where you would need to respond to a bullying situation. For each situation, let’s come up with possible responses that will either empower yourself or empower the bully:

  • Your classmate tweets something negative about you that isn’t true.
  • Your so-called friend threatens to hurt you if you don’t do their homework.
  • A bully starts mocking the way you talk during lunch at school.
  • You see another student being bullied in the bleachers during a school sports game.
  • A group of popular students makes fun of the way you dress.
  • Your gym teacher makes fun of you for being the slowest runner he’s ever seen.

4. Individual Assignment

Regardless of how you respond publicly to bullying, it is also important how you respond internally to a bully. Make a list of 5 TIMES I WOULD SET A MENTAL BOUNDARY WITH A BULLY. In other words, write out five scenarios where you could simply let the bullying roll off your back without letting it hurt you in the inside. Turn in the assignment on ____________________.

  1. Identify The Top 10 Ways to Respond to Cyberbullying using the video lesson.
  2. Assess how different social media apps can be used for cyberbullying.
  3. Describe two positive ways they can respond to cyberbullying situations.

2. Discussion Questions

Have you ever witnessed cyberbullying? How did you respond?

Which one of the Top 10 Tips to Prevent Cyberbullying sticks out to you the most and why?

How would an app like TruthLocker help a student who is cyberbullied?

What can you do next time you witness cyberbullying?

3. Group Activities

A.  Write “CYBERBULLYING” on the whiteboard and ask students to list some of the most popular new apps that students are using today. Create a list of The Top 10 Apps Students Are Using Today. Let the students vote to determine the Top 10.

B.  Use a ball or a wadded up piece of paper and throw it to the students. When a student catches it, ask them to create a hypothetical cyberbullying scenario using one of the apps on the list.

C.  Next, have the student throw the ball/wadded-up-paper to another student. Ask whoever catches it to think of a positive way to respond to the hypothetical cyberbullying situation.

4. Individual Assignment

Write a short essay (half a page or less) on the following two topics: A) One Positive Way I Can Respond When I’m Cyberbullied. 2) One Positive Way I Can Respond When I See Someone Else Being Cyberbullied.
